LivingMyLifeTM Program for Diabetes The
cost of diabetes in the United States has been estimated at $132 billion
in direct health care expenditures and lost productivity. People with diabetes
continue to incur health care costs that are almost 2.5 times higher than
people without diabetes. To combat these statistics and assist member organizations
and their employees/dependents with diabetes, PBGH partnered with the American
Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation, PharmaCare and Duquesne University's
Mylan School of Pharmacy to initiate the LivingMyLife
program for diabetes.LivingMyLife, a healthy living program, is an innovative program designed to help people manage their diabetes and improve overall health. A voluntary program, participating companies incent their eligible employees/dependents by waiving their copays for diabetes medications and testing supplies. To get these medications and supplies free, the enrolled person agrees to meet regularly with a specially trained coach-pharmacist who works with the enrollee's physician to set goals and track progress. Through this active engagement and accountability strategy, people with diabetes are urged to actively manage not only their condition, but their overall health. Participating employers, with more than 50 enrollees in the program, receive aggregated, company-specific analyses of their enrolled population and the impact the program is having on care improvement and overall costs. Results are provided on the total health care spend including the pharmacist-coach sessions, the use of the prescription drug and medical benefits, and clinical care measurements, all compared to PBGH and national benchmarks.
